Ever looked at a UAE e-invoicing diagram and wondered why a supplier-to-buyer invoice suddenly needs five numbered boxes?
Well, fair question. Under UAE e-invoicing, the invoice also has to be validated, routed through accredited providers, and reported to the Federal Tax Authority.
The 5-Corner Model separates those jobs across five participants, allowing the commercial invoice to move between businesses while tax reporting happens alongside it.
What Is the 5-Corner Model?
The UAE Ministry of Finance describes its e-invoicing architecture as Decentralized Continuous Transaction Control and Exchange, or DCTCE. It combines structured invoice exchange with electronic tax reporting.
There is no single person to credit with inventing the UAE diagram. The model grows out of Peppol’s established four-corner architecture:
- Sender
- Sender’s service provider
- Receiver’s service provider
- Receiver.
OpenPeppol has also developed a five-corner e-invoicing and e-reporting architecture for systems where tax administrations receive transaction data. The UAE applies that idea with the FTA as Corner 5.
In simple words, the supplier connects through its ASP, the buyer uses its own ASP, and tax data is reported alongside the exchange.
Breaking Down Each of the 5 Corners
Corner 1: The Supplier
Corner 1 is the business issuing the invoice.
For example, imagine a Dubai distributor billing an Abu Dhabi customer. The transaction will begin in the supplier’s ERP or accounting system. It includes buyer details, invoice date, line items, taxable amounts, VAT data, and other required fields.
The C1 can send e-invoice data to its UAE Accredited Service Provider in PINT AE or another format agreed with that provider. The source system therefore does not necessarily need to produce the final Peppol XML itself.
Corner 2: The Supplier’s Accredited Service Provider
Corner 2 is the supplier’s gateway to the regulated exchange.
The ASP validates the data and, where needed, converts it into the UAE-standard e-invoice XML format. It then sends the structured invoice to Corner 3, the buyer’s ASP. In parallel, C2 reports a Tax Data Document, or TDD, to Corner 5.
